Cody Jarrett (Cagney) is a psychotic criminal who is devoted to his ma. He suffers from "buzz saw" headaches and is wanted for murder. He pleads guilty to a lesser crime so undercover agent, Hank Fallon (Edmund O'Brien), is placed in jail with him in case he confesses. All the while Cody is plagued by a treacherous wife and his deputy. The ending is one of the most explosive in Hollywood history.
